It seems the cost to Iowa Valley Community College District taxpayers for renovating Marshalltown's Orpheum Theatre will again be going up. Marshalltown Times Republican staff writer Andrew Potter reported in the Tuesday, April 14, newspaper the costs associated with building a replacement beauty shop will likely exceed the original $40,000 - $50,000 estimate. As part of the renovation plan, Starla's Classic Cuts Beauty Shop, in a building adjacent to the east side of the Orpheum is to be demolished. In a deal cut with Starla, Marshalltown Community College Construction Technology is building a new beauty shop for her on property purchased across the street. Russ Yarrow, identified in the story as associate professor of construction technology at MCC, "said the original cost estimates of the project were $40,000 to $50,000, but he expected it to cost more especially since they had to use a subcontractor for the foundation." Looks like somebody in construction technology or whomever is responsible should, at the least, have to repeat an estimating class or, better yet, flunk. As part of a $35 million Iowa Valley Community College District bond issue approved in 2006, about $2.2 million was earmarked for the Orpheum project. Bids came in higher and the Iowa Valley Board then authorized a hike to more than $3.3 million on Sept. 3 of last year. The Orpheum renovation languished for years until Iowa Valley rode to the rescue. Let's hope the board doesn't get wind of plans floating to rebuild the old Marshalltown Public Library. -J. Speer
