Doumau brings B.E.S.T. Shooting camp to STC

June 13, 2011
By Charley Townsley
Craig Doumau, Carroll, came to the STC High School Thursday, June 9, for the first day of the B.E.S.T. (Basketball’s Effective Shot Training) meeting with seven STC high school students in hopes of improving their shot skills.

As a former player and now business teacher/coach at Carroll, Doumau’s credentials speak for themselves.

Doumau still holds some key records in three-point shooting at the Iowa boys High School Basketball tournament. As a player for M-OC (Moc-Orange City) in 1990 Doumau scored 11 three-point goals in one game and 28 in his three-games that year. He also leads the state with 44 three-point goals in a nine-game tounrament career.

They view the B.E.S.T. Camp as a school. Students are asked to complete weekly assignments. Learning is a requirement. This learning experience stretches over multiple weeks of intense schooling. The instructors drill the proper fundamentals of the shot, shooting the shot effectively in game situations, and becoming a real offensive threat. Assignments are then given to students so they can master these shots.

B.E.S.T. Objectives

1. Proper stroke pattern that results in proper lift and consistency of the shot (ball above bicep, wrinkle in wrist, butt behind heels, weight to rim).

2.Correct timing of the stroke (toes, first two fingers).

3.Proper hand placement (catch, snap, finish).

4.Footwork fundamentals from balance step to snap (feet finished when the basketball touches the hands, low to lower from pass to catch).

5.Shooting the basketball with consistent footwork and stroke at ever increasing game speeds (elementary, middle school, high school, all-conference, all-state, all-American, professional).

The B.E.S.T. Camp will continue June 23 and 30 and July 14 and 21.

Traditional STC skills camp by coach Lonnie Hammnd will be offered in July
