October 16, 2012, was an early day for Sunny Hill resident, Fred VanDeWalle, as he was getting prepared for his flight to Washington D.C.
Fred, a WWII Veteran, joined a group of many other teterans and boarded the Honor Flight. Sunny Hill staff member, Katie Ealy, partnered with Fred's family to make this great experience happen. Fred and his granddaughter, Marcie, took the flight together. They left from the airport in Cedar Rapids around 6 a.m.
As they landed in Washington D.C. they were honored by a water salute over the airplane, and as they entered the airport they were greeted by many people.

The Honor Flight experience allowed them to see all of the WWII, Korean, and Vietnam Memorials in one day. All the Veterans travel and share the experience together.
"It was a great trip," Fred said, As they arrived back to Cedar Rapids from their flight to Washington D.C. they were greeted by a welcoming committee to express their gratitude to the Veterans for all they have done for our Country.
"I couldn't believe it, all those people" Fred commented on how he felt when he received his welcome home. When asked about his experience Fred stated, "It was great and I would do it again."
