South Tama's wrestling team had a successful individual tournament as 17 Trojans placed in the top six of their weight class in Ankeny on Saturday.
The STC varsity squad finished third out of eight teams. All seven other schools are Class 3A and STC was the only Class 2A school. Ankeny won the meet with 215.5 points, while Algona placed runner-up with 190.5 points. STC scored 169 to finish third.
The Trojans also left the meet with two individual champions. Kade Steuhm won the 126-pound weight class. He beat Jake Adams of Algona 5-3 in the finals. Erik Lux was the other STC champion. He defeated Joe Teague of Algona 8-3 in the finals match to win the 170 lbs. weight class.
Placing second in their respective weight classes were Bailey Chyma (138) and Dalton Vest (220). Jaret Probasco (106), Lucas Shope (132) and Levi Kaufman (152) all finished third, while Jake Thiessen (120), Kolton Smith (160) and Kyle Llewellyn (182) each placed fourth for the Trojans. Bryce Climer (195) also placed fifth for STC.
"Most of our athletes wrestled up to their seed and better," coach Nate Van Dyke said. "Eleven of our 12 varsity wrestlers placed in the top 5. Ten of those were top four. We have been gaining momentum throughout the season. Kade Steuhm wrestled very tough as he won his first ever high school tournament. Also, Dalton Vest made his first tournament finals appearance."
On the junior varsity level, Brandyn Jenson (126) and Trent Banes (170) led the way with second-place finishes. Bryce Ellenbecker (113) placed third, while Jerry Lowe (182) and Garrett Hoskey (220) finished fourth. Zach Morris (160) placed sixth for STC.
The Trojans will be competing at East Marshall on Saturday. They will also host the NICL meet on Jan. 26.
