Expanding Iowa’s middle class is top 2013 priority

Sees opportunities for bipartisan agreement

January 21, 2013
From: State Senator Steve Sodders - D-State Center , Toledo Chronicle, Tama News-Herald

The 2013 session of the Iowa Legislature began on Monday, January 14. State Senator Steve Sodders (State Center) said his top priority is expanding Iowa's middle class.

"My top goal for this session is making Iowa's middle class larger and more secure. If we focus on that goal, we will be doing the right things when it comes to the economy, education, and health care," Sodders said. "I'll be working on legislation that will help Iowa workers gain new skills, improve our local schools, reduce family health care worries, and grow small and Main Street businesses."

Control of the legislature will be divided, with Democrats maintaining the leadership of the Iowa Senate and a Republican majority continuing to control the Iowa House. Legislation approved by both houses must also be approved by Republican Governor Terry Branstad.

"There are lots of new faces at the Statehouse and I hope that means people will be willing to reach across party lines to get things done," Sodders said.

Senator Sodders is Senate President Pro Tem and Chair of the Economic Growth Committee. He also serves on the Judiciary, Agriculture, Labor & Business, State Government, Veterans Affairs, and Rules & Administration committees.

Sodders said Iowa's budget surplus might make agreement easier.

Unlike other states, we have some resources to invest in growing our economy and expanding opportunity for Iowa families," Sodders said. "States like Iowa--states with great schools at every level, top-notch workers, and a tradition of pulling together--have the chance to shine if we keep our eye on the ball."

Sodders said he would work hard to keep constituents informed and appreciates their feedback.

"Often I hear the best ideas first from the people in my district, said Sodders. If you have a suggestion or a comment, please let me know. My email address is steve.sodders@legis.iowa.gov and I can also be reached at (641) 751-4140."
