To the editor:
As a former letter pointed out, it is absolutely correct to be concerned about the national debt. However, there is at least a degree of hope on the horizon. In 2009, the debt was 1,400 billion; in 2010 and 2011, the debt was 1,300 billion. In 2012, the debt was 1,090 billion. The PROJECTED debt in 2013 is 600 billion. The trend, at least, seems hopeful. (Data from the Congressional Budget Office).
Probably a large part of this debt reduction is due to Obama's policy to continue to pull out in Iran and Afghanistan. War is expensive, and from the start, both these wars were unfunded in the sense that the money for them was borrowed.
Another ray of hope is found in the past. President Clinton was able to work with Democrats and moderate Republicans to balance the budget. Perhaps, if more moderate Republicans come to office, the task can be accomplished again.
