South Tama County boys soccer coaches Dima Shklyarov and Dave Chizek held a postseason dessert banquet for their team.
It was held near the end of May in the STC High School, in conjunction with the STC girls soccer banquet. Both teams received letters and awards, while enjoying some ice cream and other desserts.
"We have so much paper work, it might take an hour to hand it all out," Shklyarov said.
The Trojans coaches distributed certificates of participation, athletic letters and even a few awards voted on by the players. Three STC players earned All-Academic NICL honors. They were Juan Jesus Angel, David Bennett and Alex Martinez.
The award winners were:
Optimist - Assistant Coach Dave Chizek
Most Improved - Santiago Villafana
Team Anchor - Eric Luna
Golden Goal for MVP - Luis Perez
"The number of awards we gave did not reflect the number of people who had a really impressive season," Shklyarov said. "We didn't have a lot of players, but everyone of of you stepped up. All of you guys did a lot. Look around, everybody deserved an award."
South Tama's Adrian Castanon also received the Golden Boot award for most goals on the season. After two seasons with the Trojans, the sophomore has 30 goals, which ties him for the most in school history.
The Trojans coach finished the banquet with a message to the returning players.
"We're looking forward to seeing all of you back, who are not seniors," Shklyarov said. "Some people are threatening early graduation and some people are threatening early retirement from soccer. I hope everybody will stay with the program, because should be better next season. We will not have to learn the system or argue that much, because you already know my expectations."
