South Tama schools salary hikes in a 4 - 4.5 percent range

On a 4-0 vote, the South Tama School Board approved the negotiated master contract with a 4.49 percent increase for a total cost of $303,158. Voting in favor were members Michelle Yuska, Mark McFate, Jackie Dvorak and Alan Kline. Member Anne Michael was absent.

The compensation packages for support staff and administration will be 4.5 per cent salary increase without insurance benefits.

The support staff with insurance benefits will receive a 4.0 percent increase.

Administrators will receive 4.0 salary increase.

The final dollar amount includes the salary increases and increase in benefits to pay a single insurance policy for eligible support staff and family insurance policy for administrators.

Total cost salary increase and benefits will cost $287,083.

Budget, School Start Date Hearings

Two public hearings were held on Monday, April 7, for the proposed South Tama schools budget for 2014-2015. and for public comments regarding the school board's request to begin classes before Sept. 1 the starting date specified in the Iowa Code.

The board heard no negative comments from the public regarding the request to begin the starting date for classes specified in the Iowa Code. An Aug. 18 starting date was set.

Superintendent Kerri Nelson said starting classesprior to Sept. 1 allows the district to maximize instructional time prior to winter weather conditions when school is more likely to be delayed or cancelled.

It also allows for the semester to end closer to the natural winter break. The student start date on the calendar accommodates families who want to participate in the State Fair which is held August 7-17.

Personnel

Contracts were issued for Danny May, high school chemistry andpPhysics effective August, 2014. at a salary of $38,739 (the final amount being based on 2014-15 salary schedule and Cally Thomson, Middle School softball coach for the summer of 2014 at a salary of $2,033.

Carmen Angel will be a volunteer coach for High School soccer, starting in the spring of 2014.

Resignations were accepted from Charlene Rosenfelder as elementary Title VII aide; Rachel Kramer, elementary special education. Nicole Mathews, cheerleading coach. Melinda McDowell, 9th Grade Girls Volleyball coach and Nancy Hubbard, elementary teacher.

To Offer Technology Course

School officials have been considering adding a technology literacy course to the High School.

Starting in 2014-2015 this will happen. Those who have been working on this said it will be a one-semester course seeking to empower students with technological knowledge and skills to learn effectively and productively.

Literacy is defined as the ability to access, manage, integrate, valuate and create information in order to function in a knowledge society' (Iowa Core Curriculum, 2010).

During high school, students should have the opportunity to enhance their learning with more specialized and sophisticated technology tools. Assignments in the course will be computer and / or iPad based.

Potential Assignments will include online portfolio of work from High School career in the form of a dynamic website, video news podcast, App development or other coding project, collaborative research project differentiated for product, digital tool evaluation, create online tutorials for others and student designed project.

To Buy Supplies From Group

An agreement was approved between the South Tama School District and the Iowa Association for Educational Purchasing for the 2014-15 school year. This agreement is for South Tama to purchase an aggregate monthly total of 60 percent of its food and supplies from the Iowa Association for Educational Purchasing (IAEP) excluding milk, bread and small wares and ware wash.

This contract will be effective beginning July 1, 2014.

Two bids were received for the financial audit for the fiscal years 2014, 2015 and 2016. One bid came from Hogan-Hansen bid with $13,000 for 2014, $14,000 for 2015 and $15,000 for 2016.

Nolte, Cornman and Johnson from Newton bid $8,100 for 2014, $8,600 for 2015 and $9,100 for 2016. Nolte, Cornman and Johnson's bid was approved.

Soccer Shared With East Marsall

East Marshall schools will again join in a shared agreement with South Tama for a soccer team. Jeremy Jones, South Tama activities director, told board members this is an annual request. Jones said sharing helps fill the numbers for the soccer program. Approximately 10 girls and two boys are interested in the soccer program. Jones says about 50 percent of the students are active in sports.

Following the action items at the board meeting two items were up for discussion.

The first was on the Code of Conduct Policy Revisions. This concerns students who participate in activities in South Tama. Activities are considered a privilege, not a right, and in order to retain eligibility for participation in these activities students must exemplify high standards of behavior and conduct themselves as good citizens both in and out of school at all times.

Students who represent the school in an activity are expected to serve as role models to other students and to members of the community. As a result, the Board of Education has established a Good Conduct Policy that governs students who choose to participate in activities in South Tama.

All students will receive a copy of the revision in the code of conduct. This can also obtained in the principal's offices in South Tama Schools.

There also was a webinar program and discussion on security proposals. Walsh Security was the one presenting the Webinar. No decisions on the discussion items were made.
