Plunge for Landon

April 18, 2014
Allison Graham - Sports Editor ( , Toledo Chronicle, Tama News-Herald

I wasn't planning on having another Adventures with Allison column so quickly but an opportunity presented itself that I could not refuse. In case you have been living under a rock or just don't have Facebook, about a week ago videos of people running, jumping and plunging into ponds, rivers and even oceans started to appear on the popular social networking site.

Why, might you ask? It's all for a very good cause. Landon Shaw is a five month old baby who lives in Missouri. Landon has been battling stage four terminal cancer. As someone who has lost a loved one to cancer myself I thought it was a great opportunity to give a little something to a family who is going through such a terrible time. It is truly awful to watch an adult battle this horrific disease but there is something so wrong about seeing an innocent baby struggle in this way.

The details are fairly simple. Basically what happens is you are challenged by someone you know to jump (or in my case run slowly) into a body of water. You film your experience and then post it to your Facebook profile. Whoever gave you the challenge then donates a specified amount to help with medical expenses for Landon. Then it is your turn to challenge well really whoever you want to challenge. There is also a Facebook group called Plunge for Landon that acts as a centralized site where people from all over the country can share their challenges. The group has amassed nearly 44,000 followers since being started on March 30.

I took the plunge on Monday April 14 and yes, it was cold. The temperature was somewhere in the 30's so I can't imagine what the water temperature was but it was totally worth it! I am someone who normally does not take a whole lot of risks but since I have turned 30 I have decided it is now or never! I certainly don't want to live my life with regrets so I challenged a few people to take the plunge. I would just like to send a shout out to Todd and Amanda Timm for challenging me and Tim Klenk, Joe Corns, Collette Tovar, Nicole Hitchcock and Brian Dietrich for doing the plunge. You all are awesome people who are doing something for a great cause. Also thanks to my husband Darvin who rode along and brought the towels. Darvin also filmed and edited the video which you can see on my YouTube channel at

For those who decide to take the plunge I strongly encourage you to get out of your wet clothes as quickly as possible. It is cold out there and I don't want anyone getting hurt or sick doing this. Also, DO NOT LINGER IN THE WATER! I reiterate that it is cold. Get in and get out. With that said, don't be a sissy. If you are going to do it, you should definitely go all the way under the water. Go big or go home right?!?

Donating to Landon

If jumping into freezing water isn't for you, never fear. You can donate to help Landon by sending money to a fund that has been established. Landon Shaw, Flower Mill, 606 Main Street, Tarkio, MO 64491
