Iowa State Patrol Heightens Enforcement This Fourth of July

July 4, 2015
Toledo Chronicle, Tama News-Herald

DES MOINES- The Iowa Department of Public Safety's (DPS) Iowa State Patrol (ISP) will be stepping up efforts and increasing the number of troopers on roadways this Fourth of July holiday weekend as thousands of Iowans are expected to travel.

The Fourth of July holiday weekend is typically one of the most heavily traveled times of the year and officials with the Iowa State Patrol want to remind motorists to obey all traffic laws. Officers will be looking for seat belt violations, speeding violations, impaired and distracted drivers.

In 2014, there were seven fatalities in Iowa, of which three were alcohol related. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reports that in 2013, (the most recent data available) 512 people were killed over the July 4th holiday weekend--nearly 40% of those were alcohol related, with a BAC of .08% or higher.
