Donald "Jeep" Hansen

Donald "Jeep" Hansen, son of Harry and Emma, was born November 2, 1930 in Toledo, Iowa. He passed away February 10, 2017 at the VA Hospice in Des Moines, Iowa in the presence of his loved ones. He served in the US Army from 1948 to 1961 as a Cook and MP Sergeant. After the military, he was a foreman at Schwartz Steel for 14 years.As a longtime resident of Marshalltown he ran a used furniture and hauling business with the love of his life Ramona Heltsley until her passing in 1995. He raised her children De, Di, Jack, and Val with love and care.

Don took great pride in everything he did; his passion for life showed through in his work and hobbies. He was highly revered by his extended friends and family. He had a sparkling sense of humor and never lost his quick wit.

Don enjoyed Scrabble, cooking, music, television, and always had a puzzle going on the dining room table. He loved animals, especially the cats and wild critters who adopted him over the years.Don was preceded in death by his parents; brothers Alfred, Harry, & Jack; and sisters Esther, Lorraine, & Zona. Also his first wife Collene and their two daughters Brenda & Coral. Left grieving him are his children Deanna, Dianna, Jack, and Valerie. Also his granddaughters Coral, Victoria, Stacey, and Christina and many, many extended loving family members.

Our sorrow cannot be expressed at the loss of our beloved "Gramp." He was a genuine person who cared for others with the deepest empathy and he always treated everyone he met with a limitless dignity and respect. There are no words that can do him justice to express how incredible he was and truly honor his greatness.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, February 18th from 12:00-3:00pm at the American Legion, 109 N Main Street Toledo, IA 52342. In recognition of his current cat Bitty and his love for animals, please donate to an animal charity of your choice in lieu of flowers.
