STC Trojans celebrate boys’ senior night

Filloon hits thrilling three point shot

On Friday, February 10 the South Tama Trojans hosted the Dyersville Beckman Trailblazers. It was the final game of the regular season. The Trojans did not win the game. But in the waning minutes of a blowout loss, something happened that got the Trojans and their crowd on their feet.

South Tama senior Hunter Filloon came into the game. This was his first year out for high school basketball and he has been playing predominately on the JV squad. The last home game of a season is traditionally celebrated with senior night. As the final minutes wound down Filloon's teammates were clearly trying to set him up for a shot opportunity. His first attempt, a layup, circled the rim and fell to the floor. But he had another chance. Senior teammate Riley Davenport found Hunter open beyond the arc. The pass connected, Filloon rose up and nailed the three-point shot! The. Crowd. Went. Wild.

While he was honored prior to the start of the game, the Trojans were without their senior starter and leading scorer Clayton Rosenberger. He appeared to have suffered an ankle injury sometime prior to the game as he was seen on the bench icing his ankle.

STC didn't have an answer to a red hot Beckman offense that featured Sam Stelken and Jackson Bennett. The pair combined to score 39 points for the Trailblazers. Beckman ran a quick passing game and were able to use their size to drive to the basket. Beckman got the win 84-64 in the non-conference matchup.

But that lone shot by Filloon was all the Trojans needed to end the night on a high note.

Seniors basketball players honored during Senior Night included Riley Davenport, Hunter Filloon, Adonis Lasley, and Clayton Rosenberger. Also honored were senior manager Jasmin Solis and Senior Pep Band members Lauren Gumm, Anna Dvorak, Thayne Lamb, Wyatt Hintermeister, Cassy Plowman, Hunter White and Ashley Thomazin.

The Trojans will have their first round of post season play on Monday, February 20. The Trojans will travel to a neutral site at Center Point-Urbana to take on the Vinton-Shellsburg Vikings. The South Tama vs. Vinton game will tip off at 6:30 p.m.
