Work on the $5.7 million addition to South Tama High School in Tama has proceeded through the winter months without interruption Steve McAdoo, , South Tama maintenance supervisor, said Tuesday. On Tuesday workers were busy painting, tiling and working on completion of heating and air conditioning work in the two-story classroom areas.

McAdoo said work on the new section is targeted for completion in the first week of May. The addition is being built on the southwest side of the building on the spot where portable classrooms were located from 1987 until this past summer when they were razed.

Attention will then be turned to remodeling work in the original school building as soon as classes end for the summer about June 1, he said.

Work in progress are HVAC duct work, electrical wires being pulled plumbing in restrooms and doors from new addition to old part are being cut in.

The spacious classrooms in the 26,480 sq. ft. will be devoted primarily to math and science with a commons area in the center.

Band Room

Additionally, a new band room is also being built on the west side of the addition area.

New heating and the addition of air conditioning and a sprinkler system will be main parts of the work to be completed in the main high school building. McAdoo said it is targeted to be done by Aug. 1.

The present band room is to be converted to use as a vocal music room.

Interior renovations including moving the art room to the industrial tech area and completion of a drafting and new industrial technology room have already been completed within the existing building.

Garling Construction, Belle Plaine, is the general contractor for the addition and improvements to the original high school.

Bonds to pay for the new construction in the amount of $6,315,000 were approved in June, 2106 by the South Tama School Board.

Repayment of the bonds is from funds generated from the SAVE fund, a sales tax funding vehicle based upon student enrollment.

The original South Tama High School building was opened in February, 1968. Cost of the building and site then was $1,165,955.
