Raiders escape with narrow 1-0 win over STC

May 3, 2017
By Bob McBain - Head Girls Soccer Coach , Toledo Chronicle, Tama News-Herald

The game started at 4:30 with Abby Llewellyn in goal. The defensive line was Olivia Terrones, Emily Terrones, Carina Chavarria, Keely Driscoll. Midfield starters were Taylor Hrabak, Jaelin Berger, Esmeralda DeLa Torre, and Sadie Smith. Forwards were Abby Ryan and Estrella Castellanos.

The game started under cloudy skies with a slight wind out of the west. This was a game that the ST/EM defense stated again with a different lineup due to injuries and missing people.

But saying that the defense played very solid all evening. Mid-Field play was just as good, and between the two of them ST/EM controlled the tempo of the game and the flow of the game. The game was played in the mid-field for the most part, and mainly in the Williamsburg end of the field. But this was a game that ST/EM won in time of possession and shots and control, but one mistake cost them.

In the 18th minute of the first half, the ST/EM defense got called for a trip in the penalty area, and Williamsburg converted the kick for a 1-0 lead. This was the only time that Williamsburg made it into the penalty box in the first half. It was a costly error on the evening.

The second half was more of the same, with ST/EM dominating the pitch but could not find the back of the goal.

In the 42nd minute Sadie had a nice shot but into the side of the net. Haley Dunning had a good look in the 71st minute but to the keeper. And this is the way the game went. ST/EM winning the game on the field but not on the scoreboard. And this is the way the game ended with Williamsburg taking a 1-0 win.

Williamsburg only had 4 shot and only 1 on goal for the game, while ST/EM had 15 shots and 5 on goal. But the penalty call was the difference on this evening. ST/EM kept creating chances but were unable to find the back of the net. ST/EM played hard and never gave up, as they were controlling the game. Ariana Avila, Aleks Beha, Haley Dunning, Autumn Papakee, Azra Papakee, Salma Razak, and Mallory Thede all contributed to the effort ton the evening.

This was one of those games that the team did everything right but finish. They were winning the 50/50 chances, and kept the game in the Williamsburg end of the field. The effort was there, but the outcome was not what the team wanted. ST/EM will have to bounce back quickly, as they go to Vinton for a game on Friday, and then have 4 games next week.
