Disappointed....Again!

The Way I See it

May 7, 2017
By John Sheda , Toledo Chronicle, Tama News-Herald

I might just as well admit it. It's never gonna happen! I've had my chances but have been passed over time and time again. I've been rejected enough times that I can plainly see the handwriting on the wall. IT JUST AIN'T GONNA HAPPEN!

For over 25 years now, People Magazine has overlooked me for "Sexiest Man Alive." Haven't even been considered. Nary a phone call. I can't figure it out. Personally I think I'm pretty hot, But to be honest, that's not what really gripes me. It's been 48 years since I graduated from good old South Tama High School. At least, I think it's been 48. Give or take a few, I guess. Algebra wasn't my strongest subject. I didn't expect it right away but gee whiz, after all these years, I've never been invited to give the High School Commencement address here. Or anywhere for that matter.

I have now accepted this. Therefore today's column is my personal Commencement address to High School graduates world wide. Here goes....

"Young men and women of South Tama, (and everywhere), I've learned a few things along the highway of life and today I'm here sharing my vast wealth of experience and knowledge. I guarantee you will be inspired. Your success in life in just minutes away.

Here are my "Rules For Life Outside High School:"

Don't worry about what other people think. After all, they don't do it very often.

If you're gonna choose between two evils, pick the one you've never tried before.

Anyone that is nice to you but rude to the waitress is not a nice person.

Opportunities in life will always look bigger and better going than coming.

Men are from Earth. Women are from Earth. You just gonna have to deal with it.

Life is not fair. Deal with that, too.

Happy wife, happy life. Another thing to just deal with.

There is not one shred of evidence that life should be taken seriously.

Never refuse a homemade chocolate chip cookie. Homemade brownie either.

There can be a fine line between a hobby and definite instability.

Over tip! You'll feel better and so will the waitress.

No one really cares if you can't dance or sing. Dance and sing anyway.

Experience can be a wonderful thing. It will help you recognize the mistake when you make it again.

Remember life is NOT Burger King. You don't always get to have it your way.

Once married, the journey of 1000 miles begins with, "Did you turn the coffee pot off?"

You are precious, special and unique. Just like everyone else!!

It will happen that sometimes you are the pigeon and other times you are the statue.

If it itches, men will scratch.....whenever and wherever.

Everyone is normal until you get to know them.

It's not the world's job to build your self esteem. Get out. Get up and do something worthwhile.

Be kind--ALWAYS.

Every single day of the rest of your life, be a "random act" of kindness kind of guy or gal.

Family is all important. They're always there for you.

There ya have it. Haruumph!

Happy Graduation to the 2017 STC High School Graduates. Hope you enjoyed my speech.

What did the rest of ya think? Let me know some of your thoughts and bits of advice at jsheda@indytel.com or call me at 319.327.4640. Love to hear from you
