Calls for restoring Toleod Community Building

May 25, 2017
Toledo Chronicle, Tama News-Herald

Letter to the Editor:

I can't begin to say how VERY disappointed we are in the Toledo City Council and government in general for the recent decisions regarding OUR Community Building.

Instead of hoping to get $'s to DESTROY, how about looking for ways to RESTORE like other towns our size have done? Dysart for example-their community building (much like ours) is something to be proud of for people to enjoy. And have you driven down Belle Plaine's main street lately? What a pleasure-both done with community effort and cooperation. Quite a difference!

A huge community effort led to the revival of our beautiful Wieting Theatre The same could be done here-it's NOT too late! The need for a parking lot is ridiculous-this is NOT Iowa City or Des Moines, but small town rural Iowa. I have been to many, if not most events held at the theatre and have yet to see one where main and other street parking was inadequate-with the possible exception of Pam's Dance recitals in the past. Which, by the way also began in the Community Building and served so many young talented persons for many, many years.

To say nothing of the needs of our Senior Citizens-it was through their many years of hard work and loyalty that our town thrived! Ms. Reining would not be very proud that her generous gift to the city cannot be used to provide a place for them.

In my 82 years I have never written a letter to the editor before but felt I had to share the disappointment of so many of our friends and neighbors. I only hope that when the next election comes around the voting citizens of Toledo remember how well they were represented by those in office at this time.
