STC Trojans fall to BGM Bears

June 14, 2017
By Allison Graham - Sports Editor (agraham@tamatoledonews.com) , Toledo Chronicle, Tama News-Herald

The STC Trojans took to their home field last Thursday evening with a slightly altered lineup. The Trojans hosted the BGM Bears for a non-conference game. The Trojans were missing third baseman, Maci Fritz who has been a clear leader at the plate this season. Freshman Abby Sandvick stepped in to fill the role.

Sandvick is not the only underclassmen seeing lots of varsity playing time. Two other freshmen, Destinie Johnson and Makayla Backen, along with eighth grader Ashlynn Ellenbecker have all started games for the Trojans. Thus far, Ellenbecker has been leading the Trojans from the pitcher's circle. Ellenbecker has a big role to fill for the Trojans as a pitcher and while she may have a few missteps this season the gained experience could translate to positives down the road.

Ellenbecker went up against a much more seasoned team in the Bears. Five of the nine starters were upper classmen and it showed. The Bears got their bats swinging. By the time the Trojans were able to get the third out in the top of the first inning, BGM had racked up seven runs.

The Trojans were able to get on the board in the bottom of the third. Allison Yuska hit a nice fly ball to right field to get the Trojans started.

But the Bears were right on the tail of the Trojans. They added five runs in the top of the 5th and were able to stave off the Trojans defensively for a 13-1 victory.

STC will be home tonight (Wednesday) to host Beckman Catholic for a WaMaC conference matchup.
