Vikings seal the deal in fourth inning

After a difficult and at times hair pulling season the Trojans started fresh with round one of post season play. South Tama travelled to Vinton where they faced a familiar opponent, the Vinton-Shellsburg Vikings. The Vikings bested South Tama 7-0 and will move on to play East Marshall on Friday, July 7.

Despite the loss the Trojans played well, arguably the best they have played all season. Head Coach Chelsea Ahrens chalked the loss up to a game of inches.

"There were a couple of balls that were within inches of Allison (Yuska)'s glove, within inches of Maci (Fritz)'s glove, and the three run double was within an inch of Lauren (Yuska)'s glove. You could see it was probably one more step and she would have had that. Sometimes that's just how the game is. I'm really proud of them. We were ready to play and we played a really good game as far as like we were in it, we were prepared. We wanted to be here and you could tell," said Ahrens.

By the top of the fourth inning neither team had scored. But in the bottom of the fourth Vinton was able to capitalize on those inches Ahrens referred to. Pitching for South Tama was incoming freshman, Ashlynn Ellenbecker. Ellenbecker and the Trojans managed to keep the Vikings off the board through the first three innings. The fourth began with Ellenbecker walking Hannah Kalous. That was followed by a fly out to center-fielder Lauren Yuska. Vinton's Elly Gloede then got on base for the Vikings followed by Lauren Upmeyer who drove in Kalous. Another hit by Olivia Coder brought home Gloede. Ellenbecker struck out Erin Wood.

It was then back to the top of the order for Vinton and the Vikings. Elisabeth Davis-Walker was walked by Ellenbecker. With the Vikings up 3-0, the Trojans were looking to put a stop to Vinton's offensive production. Olivia Erhardt would find herself on base however and crossed the plate after a three run double from Becca Steffen that put the nail in the coffin for the Trojans.

Another run in the bottom of the 6th secured the Vikings 7-0 victory over South Tama.

Leading the Trojans from the plate was senior Lauren Yuska with two hits. The Trojans tallied five total hits with Allison Yuska, Jaelin Berger and Saylor Upah each landing on base. Ellenbecker finished the night giving up seven runs, two errors, walking four and striking out three.

Final score Vinton 7, South Tama 0.
