Here we go, again

July 13, 2017
Toledo Chronicle, Tama News-Herald

This summer has an added attraction for downtown Marshalltown. A series of Friday night music events dubbed "Live After Five" at, where else? - the Iowa Valley Community College District owned and operated Orpheum Theatre.

According to the schedule through August there's such groups as the Diplomats of Solid Sound, Bob Dorr and the Blue Band and Malcom Wells and the Two Timers and more performing out of doors.

Yes, there's a list of sponsors who are apparently paying the musicians' fees.

But, here we go again: What does this have to do with education and how much is this costing in Orpheum operational expenses?

Where's the value other than providing yet another entertainment venue for downtown Marshalltown?

And, here we go again: not only is there free music but there's a free summer family movie schedule for both Friday and Saturday in the Orpheum. Yes, they have paid sponsorship, but where's the educational value, and, how much is this costing in Orpheum operational costs?

And, yes, here we go once again- there's three "Black Box events" scheduled. Again, musical entertainment and again, is there education going on and, how much is this costing in Orpheum operational costs?

This is not the first time The Chronicle / News-Herald has cast an eye on the Iowa Valley Orpheum operation.

It has been accused of being something of a sham here before.

The Community College District dumped some $3.5 million into the theatre in a $35 million bond issue in 2006 under the guise of providing theatre classes. It continues to seem more of a bail-out for Marshalltown on a community project which had floundered.

Once again, given the history of the Iowa Valley Orpheum operation, is it not now time to call upon the Iowa Valley Board to direct the Orpheum be made into a schoolhouse?
