The 9th-ranked Grand View Vikings defeated the Evangel Crusaders with a final score of 37-17 Thursday night as both teams began their 2017 campaigns.

The Crusaders took an early lead in the first quarter as they were able to march 71 yards downfield in a disciplined drive that lasted 10 plays and 5:30 minutes. The Viking defense made a valiant stand with their backs against the wall by forcing a 4th and goal, but were ultimately unable to keep Evangel from finding the endzone.

The Vikings responded quickly as Jordan Knock (SR/Gilbert, IA / Gilbert HS) found fellow senior Alex Brammer (SR/Ames, IA / Ames HS) on a 67-yard pass completion. Brammer had an impressive run after the catch as he avoided one would-be-tackler with a spin move and shrugged off another to cross the goal line.

After the Grand View defense forced a three-and-out, it would be the same story for the offense. This time Knock and Brammer connected on a 64-yard touchdown. This time, Knock was able to extend the play by rolling out of the pocket, and threw a bomb to Brammer that led him perfectly past the Crusader defensive backs.

Evangel was able to muster one another scoring drive in the half that resulted in a 25-yard field goal. As the first half ended the Vikings would go into the locker with a 13-10 lead.

Second Half

The second half began in exciting fashion for the Grand View squad and their fans. In a great individual effort by defensive back, Jeremy Johnson (JR/Iowa City, IA / City High HS). Johnson forced a fumble at the line of scrimmage, recover the loose ball, and return it 58-yards to the endzone to put the Vikings up 20-10.

The Crusaders would score one final time on a 38-yard pass. The Vikings, who had up until this point scored on big plays, began to control possession on the ground. A mixture of lightning quick cuts from Travien Smith (SR/Mckinney, TX / North HS), thunderous power from Jerry Lowe (SO/Tama, IA / South Tama HS), and excellent run blocking by the offensive line Grand View was able to garner 153 of its 216 rushing yards in the second half.

A pair of short goal line touchdown runs by Knock and running back, Austin Regenwether (SR/Fulton, IL / Fulton HS), extended the Viking lead to 17 points. An interception by linebacker Russell Jones (JR/Waterloo, IA / East High / IWC) deep in Evangel territory set up a 23-yard field goal by Eric Fridl (FR/New Berlin, WI/ Catholic Memor) and concluded the Grand View scoring for the night.

The Vikings are now 1-0 overall and 1-0 in Heart Conference play.
