Thank you all for your support!

It seems to be a consistent theme at school events so far this year to see high levels of parent and community participation. We saw high numbers at our open houses in each building to start the year and we had constant traffic last night at our public open house to show off our new high school addition. Most of the traffic last night was fromcurious alumni and community members. Community interest in our schools is imporant and I'm happy to see many of you take pride in our schools, teachers, and students. We can't thank you enough for that support.

Now that we are past Labor Day, we are settling into school routines and getting down to work. This seemed to be a very smooth start to the school year. I have to thank many district staff members for that: building / grounds / custodial for getting our new addition in shape and cleaning up the rest of the buildings in preparation for school; bus drivers for hitting their marks and ensuring that every student is where they need to be; our teaching staff members for the hours of preparation and tons of effort it takes to create great learning environments in our classrooms; our administrators for orchestrating the entire process; our school lunch personnel for ensuring students have healthy meals before and during school, our paraprofessionals for all of the individual support they provide students, and our office support staff members for keeping the buildings running.

It takes a team to make this work and we have a good one. If you see a STC staff member in the community, take a second to thank them for their commitment and effort.

Now that the school board election is done, it seems to be a good time to examine our priorities as we focus on the work in front of us. The district has conducted numerous surveys and committees in the past working on various aspects of school district programming and operations. We would like to ask you to take 10 minutes to tell us how you think we are doing overall. Anyone reading this can participate.

Our school district is conducting a Needs Assessment Survey managed by the Iowa Association of School Boards (IASB). The survey is designed to help us assess our strengths and areas of needed improvement, with a focus on improved student achievement. We would like your opinions and judgments in response to the brief survey linked below. All responses are anonymous. Just click the link below, or paste it in your browser and follow the instructions. Thank you for your participation and helping to make improvements for our students. We will make the summary of the survey available once it is completed.

The district is also revamping its membership on the School Improvement Advisory Committee (SIAC). This committee advises the Board of Education and Superintendent on broad issues impacting students and the community as well as assisting the district in the development of various long-term plans and priorities. If you are interested, please contact me about participating.

As always, let me know if you have any comments or concerns.

My email is and my phone is 641-484-4811. Again, thanks for your continued support of STC schools!
