STC captures first conference win of season

They did it. The Trojans earned their first conference win of the season over Williamsburg on Tuesday, September 19. Not only was it the first conference win for the Trojans but it was the first time South Tama had defeated Williamsburg in volleyball in 10 years.

The Trojans (4-8) went four sets with the Raiders (4-12) winning the first two handily 25-14 and 25-13. The third set went to Williamsburg 25-16. The fourth set after many back and forths ultimately was won by South Tama 27-25.

The Trojans were again led in the attack by senior powerhouse hitter Sadie Smith. She tallied 14 kills, 4 sets, 3 digs, 2 blocks and was 11-14 in serving. "One of the things with Sadie is that she has always had the confidence but this year there are quite a few things that she wants to accomplish. She's focused on the team first which is awesome but at the same time she knows she plays such a huge role on the team so I think the confidence in that role and that that role needs to be dominant during the games and she needs to have good hitting percentages for us to win and be successful. So I think that has made a huge difference," said coach Amy Dolash.

Smith's hard work is paying off as she is currently 10th in the conference with 100 kills recorded this season.

Grace Jimenez, a senior, led defensively with 21 digs on the night. STC junior, Katie Campbell continued to be consistent from the serving line with a perfect 18-18. "Grace has done an excellent job expanding her defense," said Dolash, "Instead of getting stuck she's now adjusting well and getting back to reading what the other team is doing. The less she kind of thinks about it she gets those balls. She had some awesome digs that normally would have been more of a challenge but she was right there, she anticipated and got those up."

A standout for Dolash was senior Abbie Parizek. Parizek's role has been changed up a bit from setter to defense and for Dolash she really rose to the challenge. "Tonight she was just passing phenomenally, moving her feet, flowing with the ball, everything that we have been working on and hoping would come to fruition. It was just solid with her tonight."

For Dolash, it was the best feeling in the volleyball to earn that win. "We did what we were trying to focus on. What the girls did last night and before the game was focus on one or two things individually. Then as a team what do we want to accomplish. It was just amazing how well they went and did those one or two things. I think it really helped to focus on those one or two things instead of trying to focus on your entire game. A lot of those girls really did that well which just made a world of difference."
