Independence wins district shootout 59-26

September 22, 2017

There are no two ways around it, last Friday was tough for the Trojans. South Tama travelled to Independence for their second Class 3A District 3 game.

The two teams met last season in Tama where the Trojans trounced the Mustangs 45-8. Friday's matchup was a reverse of that outcome with the Trojans falling 59-26.

The Mustangs offense got off to an aggressive start, scoring a touchdown and two-point conversion in the opening minutes. STC responded with a touchdown by Tanner Probasco who was on the field for the first time this season after being sidelined in the opening 3 weeks. Colton Vest's PAT attempt was no good but the Trojans were on the board 8-6.

The Mustangs wasted no time finding a response. Hunter Shannon received the kickoff from STC's Joel Medina and managed to dodge the Trojan defense for another Mustang touchdown. Independence scored once again before the end of the first quarter putting the Mustangs ahead 23-6.

In the second quarter, Independence extended their lead to 31-6. The Trojans were able to cut away at the deficit with another touchdown by Probasco. The senior tailback would find the end zone once more in the first half. The Mustangs went on to score again as the seconds ticked down in the first half. Independence went into halftime up 38-19.

Coming out of halftime Independence proved they were a team that could not be tamed. The Mustangs went on to score three more times to tally 59 points. South Tama was able to advance their score once more, late in the fourth quarter when quarterback Lane Koch connected with Brady Fritz leaving the final score at 59-26.

It was a tough night and a tough loss for STC. Independence provided an environment reminiscent of a college atmosphere with music, lights, a fog machine and even a horse that ran the track during the Mustangs run out. The Trojans have continued to be plagued by untimely injuries. The latest to be sidelined was fullback and linebacker Tanner Walz.

Despite the loss, things weren't all bad for the Trojans. STC saw the return of Tanner Probasco who made quick work to make up for lost time by scoring three of STC's four touchdowns, rushing for 157 yards and 57 yards receiving.
