Iowa Premium in Tama was a stop last week on Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds and Lt. Governor Adam Gregg's Building a Better Iowa Economy tour.

Following a plant tour conducted by Iowa Premium CEO Jeffrey Johnson, the Governor said she found it "fascinating" the speed with which the employees worked in closed quarters.

Michelle Baumhover, director of marketing, and Johnson, outlined the beef plant operation noting they had many skilled butchers and others among the work force now totaling 870.

Of that number, about 300 live locally with the remainder coming from outlying areas and surrounding cities.

Johnson stressed the need for more housing locally.

"We're here and here to stay," Johnson said as the company nears its three-year anniversary mark in Tama on Nov. 7.

The discussion with the Governor and Lt. Governor also led to trade including with Europe and China. In June Iowa Premium was the first in the state to receive Chinese beef export approval.

The Building a Better Iowa Economy initiative is aimed at attracting new industry, worker training and improving the state's business climate.

The Govenror and Lt. Governo's visit followed on the heels of a recent tour by U.S. Senator Joni Ernst of the Iowa Premium operation. Her visit came just after she and the governor both showed steers in the annual Govenrors Charity Steer Show to benefit the Ronald McDonand Hosues of Iowa at the Iowa State Fair.
