Market Report for October 13, 2017

There is still plenty of produce to be purchased at the Toledo Farmers' Market. The last Toledo Farmers' Market will be Oct. 27, that means there is two weeks left of the market. Be sure to come on out and make those purchases before it's too late.

The mums are just gorgeous this time of year. To over winter hardy mums, deadhead them but don't cut the plants back. And don't forget to mulch them. Then in the spring when they start to grow prune them again for a more bushy plant. Have some nice parsley in your garden. This is a good time to transplant some to a pot for cold weather use. Taking some cuttings of plants before the frost hits, encourage rooting by adding a pinch of sugar to the water. This is a good time to sow perennial herb seed. Try some chives, fennel, sage, and thyme.

The changing of the season is taking place. Now is the time to get those bulbs planted. So take the advice of Cheryl Karpen, "When you plant bulbs in the fall, do it for all you're worth! There's no greater way to declare your faith in the future of all things bright and beautiful." Happy planting.
