South Tama competes in Vinton at WaMaC conference meet

It was an overcast start for the WaMaC cross country event hosted by Vinton on Thursday, October 12. The clouds did break midway through the varsity boys run revealing a glorious setting sun shining on the Vinton High School grounds. The temperature was around 61 degrees with southern winds of 10-20 mph.

The 16 teams that make up eastern and western divisions of the WaMaC gathered for the annual conference competition.

The overall female varsity winner was Adrianna Katcher from Center Point-Urbana with a time of 18:30 and the overall male varsity winner was Jeremy Fopma of Marion with a time of 15:45.

For South Tama Jessica Musgrave finished 40th (21:40), Espy Waseskuk 71st (23:25), Alyssa Chyma 73rd (23:32), Kelsie York-Morris 80th (23:53), and Esmeralda De La Torre 98th (25:35).

For the STC boys varsity Tyrin Lasley finished 78th (19:13), Chase Branan 92nd (20:10), Nick Jordan 98th (21:00), Jake Wilkerson 99th (21:42) and Ethan Babinat 105th (23:33).

"Our overall team scores were not good, but we knew the competition would be tough and the course fast," said head coach Robert Tyynismaa, "In light of that, we had several runners earn a personal best for the year. In the varsity boys race, Tyrin Lasley ran his best race all year and his best time. Nick Jordan also had a season's best time. In the boys JV race, Ruben Garcia and Daniel Ochoa had season bests. On the girl's side, Jessica Musgrave was our top finisher and she had a season's best time. Alyssa Chyma and Kelsie York-Morris also has season best times."

"In the girls JV race Stephanie Slaven, Jenifer Nunez, and Andreea Cojocaru all had personal bests for the season. Our next phase is to prepare for districts next Thursday at Solon, another flat, fast course," said Tyynsimaa.

For JV boys Daniel Ochoa finished 213th (25:45) and Ruben Garcia finished 214th (26:08).
