Mac Doyle Thornes

Mac Doyle Thornes, 91, of Marshalltown, passed away Friday, November 24, 2017 at the Iowa Veterans Home in Marshalltown. Funeral Services will be held Wednesday, November 29, 2017 at 11:00 AM at Kruse-Phillips Funeral Home in Tama. Visitation will be held from 10 AM until the time of service at the funeral home. Interment will be Wednesday at 2:30 PM at Strand Lutheran Cemetery in Dunbar.

Mac Doyle Thornes was born on July 3, 1926, in Iowa City, Iowa, the son of Tom and Belva (Ingraham) Thornes.

He attended school in Marshalltown, Gilman, and Dunbar and graduated from the Dunbar High School in 1944.

Mac enlisted in the U.S. Army Corps February, 1944. He did his training and was a Radio Operator Mechanic in Japan for one year. He was discharged December, 1946 as a Corporal.

Mac was united in marriage to Marian Bryngelson at the Le Grand's Friends Church in 1950 and divorced in 1970.

Mac worked as a hired man, JBS Swift & Co., and was a driver for Mahaska Beverage Company. He went to Mechanic school in Kansas City, MO. and worked at General Motors, Buick, Olds and Pontiac Assembly plant in Kansas City. He owned a Chronicle Oil gas station in Garwin, a Champlain Oil gas station in Marshalltown, and a Pizza Hut in Cedar Rapids. He started working at the Chicago Northwestern Railroad in 1952 and retired from there in 1989.

Mac enjoyed his travels to Norway four different years visiting his relation, the Ottoy's and the Salte's, and having them visit him here. He loved being a pilot and flying, enjoyed going to Mount Pleasant threshing reunions, antique power shows in Marshalltown, and his World War II Honor Flight April of 2012. Mac found joy in restoring antique tractors, particularly John Deere's. He was the Thornes and Ingrham family historian.

Mac was a Lutheran, Methodist and later a member of Harvest Time Baptist Church in Marshalltown. He was a member of the VFW.

Left to cherish his memory are his children, Mike (Maritza) Thornes of Lakeland, FL., and Carrie (Shaun) Lippincott of State Center; grandchildren, Dennis (Lori) Crosser, Emily (Nick) Ladewig, Andy Crosser, Zach Crosser, Stephanie Paul, Ross Lippincott, Lindsy (Brett) Baker, Ashley (Austen) Schueler, and Logan (Alesha) Lippincott; great-grandchildren, Lilly Ladewig, Christian, Luke, Isabelle Crosser, Easton and Pearl Baker, Tate, Blakelie and Titan Lippincott; and a special friend, Elaine Wilkerson since 1991.

Mac is preceded in death by his parents; an infant son; one daughter, Denise Thornes: one granddaughter, Amanda Crosser; sisters, Genevieve (Jim) Paxson, and Marilyn (Gene) Patterson.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Strand Lutheran Church Cemetery Fund, c/o Citizens Savings Bank, 103 S. Elm St., Gilman, Iowa, 50106.
