Superintendent Berger resigns from South Tama

At a STC School Board meeting on Monday, Jan. 8, Interim Superintendent Jeff Berger resigned from his position from South Tama effective June 30, 2018. The South Tama School Board voted 4-0 to accept the resignation with School Board President Penny Tyynismaa, and school board members Mandy Lekin, Alan Kline and Jackie Dvorak each voting to accept the resignation. Ron Houghton was not present.

Berger sent an email to staff Monday evening that reads:

"I think you are aware from my biweekly updates that the board has been deliberating about the future of the superintendent position for a couple of months. One of the most critical collaborations in a school district is between the board of education and the superintendent and it is fair to say that this board is currently split between offering me a contract for next year and posting the position to accept new applicants (remember I am interim). I believe that if the decision on retaining me is this difficult to reach after two months of discussion and data gathering, that I am not the right person for the position. As a result, I submitted my resignation to the board effective at the end of my contract (June 30). It was accepted. I will work with the board to attempt to find an individual who is a better fit for the district and I will work to ensure a smooth transition for all involved.

I've enjoyed working with you and we still have plenty of work to do. I appreciate the board giving me the opportunity to be here this year. We are doing good things for the kids of STC. Thank you and let me know if you have further comments, concerns, or questions."
