Video Recap of duals:

It was a good night for the South Tama Trojans as they brought home two dual wins on Thursday, Jan. 18.

The Trojans travelled to Mt. Vernon where they competed against Iowa City Liberty and Mt. Vernon. This is the first season for Liberty who opened their doors as a new school district in the late summer of 2017. The school is located in North Liberty and serves roughly 1000 students.

Liberty is coached by some familiar names if you follow wrestling in the State. Three-time NCAA champion and former University of Iowa wrestling's Joe Williams along with Tom Van Dyke were hired as co-head coaches according to The Iowa City Press Citizen. Van Dyke coached at Iowa City West prior to being hired at Liberty. Liberty's roster is far from full but with a coaching staff like they have it's sure to be an up and coming program.

The first dual of the evening was between South Tama and Iowa City Liberty. The Trojans racked up a quick and easy 18 points with Liberty forfeiting matches from 220 through 106. The first match up at 120 found Liberty's Jackson Brennan winning by major decision (11-2) over STC's Brady Knode.

STC's Brayden Smith captured the Trojans first win by pin over Mike Luyeye (1:41). Liberty took one more win at 132 with Jared Alger pinning STC's Adrian Nunez (4:52).

From there on out the dual was dominated by the Trojans. Brady Fritz, Pedro Rodriguez, Josh Thiessen, Dalton Rosenburg and Cael Kellogg each recorded pins at 132, 152, 170, 182 and 195. At 145 Colton Vest won by major decision and at 160 Isaac Judge won by tech fall. The combined efforts added up to a Trojan 63-10 finish.

South Tama's next dual was with Mount Vernon. The Trojans escaped with a 38-33 team win. The start of this dual once again had the Trojans down 18 points. Preston Shultz and Ryan Clark each received forfeits and Jauthat Dervo pinned Brody Chyma at 106. The Mustangs got in one more team score at 120 before the Trojans took over. Brayden Smith, Brady Fritz, each Tanner Probasco pinned their opponents at 126, 132 and 138. Colton Vest and Pedro Rodriguez won by major decision at 145 and 152.

Arguably the most competitive matchup of the night was between South Tama's Isaac Judge and Mount Vernon's Paul Ryan. Judge is ranked No. 1 in Class 2A at 152 while Ryan is No. 4 at 160. A late takedown by Ryan threatened Judge's lead but he held on for a 5-4 victory.

At 170 Josh Thiessen pinned Joe Hunter (1:24). Dalton Rosenburg won by decision (7-6) over Coy Martin. At 195 STC's Cael Kellogg took a loss to Camron Woodley. The night ended with STC's Mario Moncada also taking a loss.

The Trojans will be travelling to CPU for a quad meet on Thursday, Jan. 25. It's hard to believe it but post season is right upon us. The WaMaC tournament is set for Saturday, Jan. 27 at Maquoketa. The following Saturday the Trojans will head to Williamsburg for Sectionals on Saturday, Feb. 3 and, fingers crossed, to Knoxville for Districts on Saturday, Feb. 10.
