If the first meet of the season is any indication, it could be a wild and exciting year for the 2018 South Tama County Girls Tennis Team. Trailing 2-4, the Trojans mounted a spirited comeback to defeat Mount Vernon 5-4 on Thursday, April 5th to win the first meet of the young season.

The Mustangs notched a 4-2 lead after singles play. South Tama grabbed wins by Ana Glendy at #4 and Autumn McFate at #6. Glendy defeated Erin Fencl by a score of 8-2. McFate was victorious over Nicole Theobald 8-4.

Senior Bri Nelson faced Amanda Dragon at #1 Singles. After battling to 3-3, Dragon reeled off five consecutive games to win 8-3. Abbie Morgan gave a valiant effort at #2 Singles but fell to Megan Zobac by a score of 4-8.

Junior Zoee Buffalo locked into a battle against Grace McCollum at #3 Singles. Buffalo led 6-4 before McCollum pushed back to get into the match. Tied at 7-7, it was McCollum who converted when it counted to secure a 9-7 victory. Sophie Klotzbach proved too tough for South Tama's Abby Buffalo at #5 Singles as she posted an 8-1 win.

South Tama relied on its doubles expertise to get back into the meet. Autumn McFate/Abby Buffalo teamed at #3 Doubles to face Sophie Klotzbach/Becky Fishbein. The duo from STC asserted themselves early in the match to grab a 5-2 lead. The Mustangs were never able to make a dent in the score as McFate/Buffalo notched an 8-4 win. At #2 Doubles, Anna Glendy/Zoee Buffalo teamed for South Tama across the net from Megan Zobac/Erin Fencl. The Trojans quickly built a 6-2 lead against the Mustangs. Glendy's serving success and Buffalo's net play proved to be a lethal combination as they recorded an 8-4 win.

With the meet even at 4-4, Bri Nelson and Abbie Morgan knew the outcome of the meet rested on their rackets. The newly formed duo stepped onto the court at #1 Doubles to play Amanda Dragon/Grace McCollum. The team from Mount Vernon rode a wave of momentum early as they quickly built a 5-2 lead. Splitting the next four games, the Mustangs pushed their lead to 7-4.

Refusing to lose, Nelson/Morgan steadied their game in time to mount a furious comeback. Their success was grounded in Nelson's steady return game and Morgan's dominance at the net. Dragon/McCollum's lead quickly evaporated as the Trojans reeled off five games to grab a 9-7 win. With the victory, South Tama secured the 5-4 win.

In JV Action, South Tama posted a 7-3 win over Mount Vernon. The Trojans recorded wins by the doubles teams of Daniela Contreras/Hope Werner (2), Hannah Novotny/Jaydee Thiessen, Shauna Kapayou/Alexes Baeza, and Kaisha Struve/Molly Savage (3).
