Barb Wire Ranch boosts Easter Seals with ride across Tama County

1st Person Report

April 12, 2018
By Susan Crain , Toledo Chronicle, Tama News-Herald

On Good Friday, my husband Ryan Crain and I planned to ride from the north Tama County border to south along U.S. Hgihway 63 for as a fundraiser for Easter Seals Camp Sunnyside. We would then ride with the Pony Express into Camp Sunnyside with hundreds of others to bring in the donations on Saturday, March 31.

This is something we've wanted to do for a some time. Pony Express rides in a few local towns, but we wanted to make a trek across all of Tama County to support and recognize our own "Barb"wire Ranch, Pony Express and Easter Seals Camp Sunnyside.

We've never done any formal promoting or advertising to let local folks know we exist but we think it's time. We decided to ride Highway 63 from north of Traer (the county line) to south of Tama (county line). It is 37.4 miles across the county.

Ryan and I committed to doing this ride rain or shine and after the previous weekend's snowstorm, we were a bit nervous. Thankfully the weather cooperated, but our estimation of the time it would take was way off. We rode the first 9 miles, then switched horses at the Traer golf course. The second set of horses took us 11 miles to VanWall where we would switch horses again, but decided it was getting too late in the day to think we could make it all the way before dark. We will finish the 2nd half of the ride at a later date.

On Saturday, March 31, we rode with over 100 Pony Express riders from the John Deere location in Ankeny to Camp Sunnyside.

The Pony Express riders of Iowa have done this for many years to present the camp with the money each county has raised throughout the year. We handed over our portion to Tama County Pony Express and it was turned in with their donation total.

We documented the countdown and progress of our ride on Facebook and asked viewers to honk twice if they saw us. It was encouraging to hear from the cars that recognized us. We want to thank all of the people and businesses who donated to Easter Seals or "Barb"wire Ranch and continue to support us and encourage us. Our program offers equine therapy and riding lessons to individuals who are interested. If you are interested in donating, riding, or the therapy horses can offer, please contact us on our Facebook group, email rideatbwr@gmail.com or call one of us 507-450-8656 / 641-750-7334
