Tama Co. Soil & Water District recognizes Stewardship Week

May 4, 2018
Toledo Chronicle, Tama News-Herald

As a part of Tama County for 76 years, the Tama Soil & Water Conservation District (SWCD) wants to remind you that each of us has a connection to natural resources. The National Association of Conservation Districts (NACD) is celebrating the 63rd year of Stewardship Week during April 29 May 6, 2018. The 2018 Stewardship Week is themed "Watersheds: Our Water, Our Home."

Jack Boyer of rural Reinbeck acts as Chair for Tama SWCD. "Each of our homes is in a watershed. The actions that we take to conserve and protect our water today will affect the quality of our life and the lives of all our neighbors downstream, now and for the future," says Boyer.

The Tama SWCD was formed in 1942 to assist people in Tama County with preserving natural resources. During Stewardship Week, Tama SWCD will hosting its 5th Grade Outdoor Classroom for 266 fifth graders from six local school districts. It will also be distributing 271 paper grocery sacks through local grocers. The sacks were decorated with the Stewardship Week theme by third, fourth and fifth graders during Tama SWCD's recent annual Grocery Sack Decorating Contest.

"Clean water is important to everyone," says National Association of Conservation Districts Past President Earl Garber. "Watersheds come in all shapes and sizes. They cross county, state and national boundaries. Every inch of the land on planet Earth is part of a watershed. In the continental U.S., there are 2,100 watersheds; if we include Hawaii, Alaska and Puerto Rico, the count rises to 2,267. No matter where you are right now, you are in a watershed." Take time to learn about your local community water supply sources, and volunteer for river, stream or beach clean-up days. You can make a difference!
