Year-end accomplishments noted for STC High School students

May 28, 2018
By Dan Lopez - South Tama Guidance Counselor , Toledo Chronicle, Tama News-Herald

As the school year comes to an end, we would like to showcase a few things that have stood out this year in regards to our students being prepared (College and/or Career Ready) for the transition into the next chapter of their lives.

The High School Counseling Department Mission Statement states: "STCHS comprehensive guidance program focuses on academic, career, and social/emotional development of ALL learners. The ultimate goal is to have ALL students college and/or career ready in order ensure success for ALL graduates post-high school transition."

This is what guides our program and how we best help meet the needs of our students. Having a guide is important but not effective without the data to back it up. Below is some of the data the supports our Comprehensive Guidance Program:

After-Grad Plans

Number of Students

Four-Year College/University- 41

Community College- 43

Other Training (Apprenticeship, cosmetology, barber school)- 6

Military- 6

Work- 20

Total Students

116*

*Some students will not graduate with their class

Approximately 10 percent of the senior class will finish a degree or certification before graduation from high school:

2 students with AA degree

5 students with Welding Certificate (one has a few classes left)

1 student with Auto Tech Certification (after summer classes)

8 students who are/will be certified CNAs

Along with the class of 2018 post-grad data, STC students have taken 633 college classes this year for a total of 1753 college credits, saving families thousands of dollars on the cost of college.

Iowa Assessment Scores

Another component of College and Career Readiness indicator is our Iowa Assessment scores. The state rates individual schools on a "School Report Card," I anticipate our report card should show excellent growth for the high school based on the proficiency percentages earned by our students this year.

Below are our student's proficiency rates (raw data) for grades 9-11:

Grade 9-

Reading- 78% Math 73%

Science 79% Social Studies 84%

Grade 10-

Reading- 84% Math 75%

Science 77% Social Studies 87%

Grade 11-

Reading- 81% Math 74%

Science 78% Social Studies 83%

To give everyone a perspective on how these proficiency rates compare to other schools, West Liberty was just rated the #1 school in Iowa based on their performance on state-required tests and how well they prepare their students for college.

West Liberty has a similar demographic profile to our district and they reported a high school Reading Proficiency of 78% and a Math Proficiency of 81%.

In closure, having a data driven guidance program benefits ALL of our students. The guidance staff would like to thank the high school students, support staff, teachers, and administrators for a job well done!
