Tyynismaa nominated for Accelerated Mathematics award

May 31, 2018
Special to The Chronicle , Toledo Chronicle, Tama News-Herald

Josephine (Jo Jo) Tyynismaa joins the ranks of a small group of students who excelled in math and moved up a grade in their mathematics courses. The decision to acceleration Jo Jo was an easy one. In sixth grade math, all the students were given an online pre-test to assess their skills. Jo Jo passed all the sixth grade standards on the test - in her first week of sixth grade. Being accelerated in math is not only a challenge for students mathematically, but organizationally. Jo Jo was required to know not only her grade's schedule and schedule changes, but also the grade above her. This task became even more complex when, as an eighth grader, she began taking geometry at the High School. Juggling schedules between two buildings is an even bigger challenge since on a normal day it meant leaving class in the middle of a period and returning in the middle of another. Because of the different schedules and special events at the Middle School and High School, during the course of the year there were 20 different schedules Jo Jo had to follow at one time or another. Through it all Jo Jo excelled. She took responsibility not only for her classwork but for all the extra work involved. Her positive attitude and maturity will take her far. It is the pleasure of the Middle School Math Department to nominate Josephine Tyynismaa for the AAUW Accelerated Mathematics award.
