Friday's meet up was a battle of the offenses. South Tama travelled to Green Mountain where they took on GMG for a non-conference contest. South Tama pulled out their first victory of the season 11-8 over GMG.

"After suffering six losses and not just losses but pretty hard losses against tough competition against some 4A schools it's nice to get the win," said Coach Chelsea Ahrens, "We came ready to play. We did have some mistakes but we battled back. It was nice because we didn't quit even though we gave up some runs and got down a little bit in the first or second inning. You could tell our confidence increased tremendously as the game went on. They are happier and they feel better about themselves."

The Trojans closed out the evening with four hits. Brittney Breya, Queta Diego, Kenze Smith and Dalaynee Henle each had a hit. Smith led the Trojans recording 3 RBI's. Taking the win for STC was Ashlynn Ellenbecker. She went for all seven innings allowing 5 hits, 8 runs, walked two and struck out 5.

GMG got an early lead over the Trojans scoring one run in the bottom of the first inning. The Trojans answered back by scoring two runs in the top of the second. With STC leading 2-1, GMG responded with their best inning of the night in the bottom of the second. They scored 4 runs to give them a 5-2 lead. To that the Trojans responded in the top of the 3rd by scoring 6 runs. GMG was knocking on the door scoring one run in both the 3rd and 4th innings. The Trojans were able to hold off the Wolverines and even gave themselves some more breathing room by scoring three runs in the top of the 6th.

The Trojans biggest opponent is at times themselves. Being a bit of a younger team they lack a bit of confidence. That showed some while the Trojans were on defense Friday evening. They seemed to get overwhelmed when a lot was happing on the field. Coach Ahrens said they often overthink what they should do.

"That comes from experience. I think they are thinking too much instead of making the easy play to one they are thinking 'Oh that girls off too far I should go after her' rather than going for the easy play," said Ahrens, "It just comes with more experience. Then once they made the double play they thought 'Oh I can do this' their confidence is restored so you just have to have one executed play."

It's still plenty early in the season. The Trojans will have lots of time to work on their team chemistry and confidence as the summer progresses. The Trojans will host Clear Creek Amana on Friday, June 8.
