South Tama hosted non-conference opponent, Montezuma for a JV/Varsity contest on Tuesday, June 12. The Bravettes took the shut out win 7-0 over the STC Trojans.

Class 1A Montezuma has returned their entire starting lineup from last season. That lineup qualified for the State Tournament in 2017. They fell to No. 1 ranked Kee in the quarterfinals 18-1.

Getting the start for the Bravettes was senior Hanna Jones. Jones lasted all seven innings and pitched a no hitter for her team. She walked just one batter and struck out six.

Tuesday's contest with Montezuma came a day after a couple of very tough conference losses. The Trojans had hosted Center Point-Urbana the evening before falling 18-2 and 14-1. Neither game lasted a full seven innings.

"We played a lot better defensively than last night, however our bats were pretty silent," said Coach Chelsea Ahrens.

"(Jones) did a nice job of hitting her spots and gave us a bit of a fit. It's interesting because we went from a 3A pitcher last night where we hit the ball really well to a 1A pitcher tonight and I thought the 1A pitcher did better than the 3A pitcher. I thought she threw the ball harder and hit her spots better and did better with her changeups. Montezuma is a state qualifying team and they play in a tough conference," said Ahrens.

Taking the loss for the Trojans was Ashlynn Ellenbecker. Ellenbecker lasted all seven innings allowing seven hits, seven runs, six errors, walked three and struck out five.

"I think we are still trying to figure out our chemistry, trying to get things together. Every night has been different trying to figure out the right batting order. We are still in that phase right now. We still have people competing for spots so that's a good phase to be in sometimes but it's hard to figure that out."
