Shirley Mae Medberry Coleman Swenson

Shirley Mae Medberry Coleman Swenson, 87, of Gladbrook, passed away Saturday, June 30, 2018 at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City after a brief illness. Funeral Services and Celebration of Life will be held Tuesday, July 3, 2018 at 2:00 PM at Stavanger Friends Church south of LeGrand with Pastor Jim Bonser officiating. Interment will be held at a later date at Woodlawn Cemetery in Toledo. Memorial Visitation will be held Tuesday, July 3, 2018 from 1 PM until the time of service at the church.

Shirley was born at home on the farm in Gladbrook, Iowa on May 31, 1931 to Oscar and Amanda (Buck) Medberry.

She completed high school at Toledo High School and was married to Howard "Chic" Coleman September 19, 1952 at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. They had 3 sons. Widowed in 1971, she married Donald E. Swenson in November of 1975, instantly gaining 3 additional children.

Her working years included jobs as a telephone operator, assisting Chic with a printing business in the home, Advertising Sales at the Toledo Chronicle and time as a clerk for Iowa Electric in Toledo and Tama. She moved back to Gladbrook, enjoyed Alpha Study Club and until recently volunteered at Matchstick Marvels Museum.

Survivors include Children: Drew Coleman, Gladbrook; Duff Coleman (Mary Rose), Monticello; Donnie Swenson (Arlene), Tama; Darlyne Swenson (Candi Smithson), Clovis, CA; and Dwayne Swenson, Marshalltown; Daughter-in-law Sarah Coleman Catherall (Dale); Grandchildren: Jonathan Coleman, Jeremy Coleman, Katie Coleman Lueken (Josh), Joel Coleman (Heidi), Jeremy Swenson (Travis Volesky), Trey Swenson, Mandy Swenson (Dana Wotinger) and Mitchell Swenson (Ashley Flathers): Great-Grandchildren Cora, Levi, Henry, Taevin and Willow Mae.Preceding Shirley in death were her parents, her sister Maureen Medberry Paul Snell, brother Daryl Medberry, Husbands, Howard Coleman and Donald E Swenson, Son David Coleman, and Grandson Casey Swenson.

Shirley was loved and treated so well by so many in-laws of the Coleman family: Mabel, Evelyn, George, Bernita, Russell, Mary, Florence, Raymond, Frances, James, Marilyn, Bettie and Gary and families as well as in-laws of the Swenson family: Roger and Shirley Lewis and Gary and Janice Wood and families.Shirley navigated a few trials during her life with grace and strength, and the support of so many, including special niece Kimberly Brown, great friends, several amazing neighbors in Gladbrook, and so many across the Toledo-Tama community when her children were young and after she lost her husband Chic. Her son Drew lived with and cared so lovingly for Shirley for the past decade.Memorials donations may be made to Stavanger Friends Church, LeGrand or the Gladbrook Ambulance Service.Kruse-Phillips Funeral Home, Tama-Toledo, is assisting the family with arrangements.
