Tama County in World War I- Historical program July 11

July 8, 2018
By Jason Staker - Special to The Chronicle , Toledo Chronicle, Tama News-Herald

The Boys of the Third Draft: Tama County and the Great War-On June 28, 1918, a group of 33 young men from Tama County posed for a photo in front of an American flag, brought together through circumstances beyond their control. The assembled men were the first call of the third draft in what would be known as World War I.

On Wednesday, July 11, a century after the photo was taken, a program at the Tama County Historical Society will explore the stories of these men, their service, and their fate at the end of World War I.

Jean Bolen, Tama Public Library assistant and Historical Society board member and volunteer, will present her painstaking research into the stories behind the faces in the draft photo, which was donated to the historical society. Her discoveries promise to be a fascinating look at the lives of these soldiers, tracing their path from draft through armistice.
