By John Speer - Editor (jspeer@tamatoledonews.com) , Toledo Chronicle, Tama News-Herald

"We have had the privilege of providing residential mission support to individuals in Toledo for a number of years, so adding a retail store and increasing the opportunity to serve aligns perfectly with our Board of Director's growth strategy," Star Rupe, president and CEO of Goodwill Industries of Northeast Iowa, Inc. told The Chronicle last Friday. Her message confirmed a Goodwill retail store will be opening in August here in the former location of Spanky's Auction at 1006 South County Rd. (U.S. Highway 63 south.)

"Our great working relationship with IHS Care Coordinators at Center Associates, the Community Clothes Closet in Tama and others made it even more inviting to come to Toledo, Rupe also said.

The store will occupy 4,200 sq. ft of the proeprty which is being leased from owners Kirk and Amy Ridout, she said. The adjoining Dollar General Store will continue to share the western prtion building according to Rupe. Most of Goodwill's space will be for sales with the rest used for doantions received and sorting of them.

"Goodwill Industries of Northeast Iowa, Inc covers a 20-county territory with retail stores in several of them. Our ability to operate retail stores throughout our area increases our ability to provide mission-services to Iowans with disabilities and disadvantages," Rupe said.

Another round of open interviews for "at least" 10 sales associates and store manager posts will be scheduled soon it was learned.

Rupe explains the Goodwill mission in hiring in this message- "Our goal is to assist those that work with us and those that we serve to achieve maximum independence. We recognize the potential of every individual regardless of physical limitation, intellectual impairment or socioeconomic barrier. he barriers to independence can only be removed when our communities are collectively committed to that goal. Our services are tailored to the individual and particular needs to of each person served. Goodwill Industries is determined to change the world by changing lives and that often happens through the power of work."

Fact Box

About Goodwill: Goodwill Industries of Northeast Iowa, Inc is a 501(c)3 non-profit agency with a mission to "remove barriers to independence." This organization was founded in 1960 with headquarters in Waterloo, Iowa. Even though this Goodwill is autonomous and operating under the guidance of a local volunteer Board of Directors, it is generally reliant on its affiliation with Goodwill Industries International and the worldwide network of independent Goodwill agencies. Last year, the Goodwill brand connected more than 300,000 people to jobs through career services, provided face-to-face services to over 2 million people, helped over 34 million people through virtual services and was involved in one of every 200 hires in the US.

Goodwill accepts a large selection of donated items and Rupe notes, "The majority of items that cannot be sold in our stores are recycled through a number of streams - we deviate hundreds of thousands of pounds from the local landfills each year."

The store building was built by Gene Grandstaff when he relocated his Super Valu store from South Main Street in downtown Toledo. He had purchased what was the United Food Market in 1967 and relocated to the South County Road location in the 1970s.

Save-A-Lot Food Store occupied the building later.
