Trojans split with Independence, Mount Vernon

As the season begins to wind down the STC Trojans had a regularly scheduled conference game with Independence on Friday, July 6 and a make-up contest with Mount Vernon on the morning of Monday, July 9. The Trojans split both double headers with Independence and Mount Vernon.

Game one was a battle of offenses between the Trojans and the Mustangs. It was also senior night for the Trojans. STC seniors Lane Koch, Tanner Probasco, Jake Wilkerson and Colton Vest along with their parents were honored in front of their home crowd. South Tama led 7-2 going into the fifth inning. STC captured the lead in the second inning when Jackson Beltz singled on a 2-2 count, scoring one run.

Independence scored one run in the top of the third when Keegan Schmitt hit a single, scoring one run, to which the Trojans responded with one of their own. Colton Vest singled on the first pitch of the at bat, scoring one run.

However a late game push allowed the Mustangs a 8-7 lead after putting six runs on the board in the top of the fifth. Independence's Zach Zieser, Seth House, Marcus Beatty, and Kenyon Hosch all moved runners across the plate with RBIs in the inning.

The Trojans regrouped following a tough defensive half of the inning. STC answered back and recaptured the lead from Independence at 12-8. Cam Klostermann singled on the first pitch and scored two runs.

Cael Kellogg earned the win 12-9 win for the Trojans. He surrendered nine runs on 15 hits over seven innings, striking out two.

Beatty got the start for Independence. He lasted six innings, allowing 15 hits and 12 runs while striking out seven.

The Trojans collected 15 hits. Kellogg, Beltz, Vest, and Klostermann all totalled multiple hits. Vest, Beltz, and Kellogg led the Trojans with three hits apiece.

Independence also had 15 hits. Derek Weber, House, Hosch, Logan Schmitt, and Tom Reiff all managed multiple hits for Independence. The Mustangs finished game one with no errors.

Game Two

In game two the Mustangs captured an early lead scoring three runs in the top of the first. The Trojans watched the game slip away unable to recover for a 7-0 loss.

Independence scored on a single by Zach Zieser in the first inning, a single by Derek Weber in the first inning, and a sacrifice groundout by Tom Reiff in the second inning.

Carter Kriegel started for the Trojans. He allowed five hits and four runs over six innings, striking out ten. Lucas Wilkerson relieved Kriegel for one inning.

Lane Koch led the Trojans from the plate with two hits in three at bats.

Reiff went 2-for-3 at the plate to lead Independence in hits. The Mustangs again had no errors.

South Tama vs. Mount Vernon

Game One

The Trojans hosted Mount Vernon for a double header starting at 11 a.m. on Monday, July 9.

STC lost the lead late and fell to the Mustangs 5-3.

The game was tied at two after Independence's Ike Appleton hit a two RBI single.

In the top of the fifth Kale Merrill singled on a 2-2 count, scoring two runs and taking the lead.

The Trojans took the loss despite outhitting the Mustangs seven to six.

Matt Martin was the winning pitcher for Mount Vernon. He allowed two runs on three hits over four innings, striking out two and walking one. Blake Booth threw three innings in relief out of the bullpen.

Lane Koch took the loss for the Trojans. He went five innings, allowing four runs on five hits and striking out three.

Carter Kriegel led the Trojans with two hits in four at bats.

Game Two

STC freshman Matt Wiese had a stellar performance from the mound for the Trojans in game two. He allowed only one hit, a leadoff bunt to start the game, and would go on to shutout the Mustangs through all seven innings. The final score of game two was 5-0, Trojans.

The Trojans got their bats swinging early in the game when Lane Koch singled and drove in a run.

Wiese earned the win for the Trojans pitching a one hitter with zero runs over seven innings, striking out seven and walking one.

Caleb Keen was on the mound for Mount Vernon. He surrendered three runs on five hits over four innings, striking out five and walking one. Kolby Volesky and Ryan Clark entered the game as relief, each throwing for an inning.

The Trojans closed the afternoon with eight hits in the game. Koch, Cam Klostermann, and Cael Kellogg each collected multiple hits for the Trojans. Kellogg, Klostermann, and Koch each collected two hits to lead the Trojans.

South Tama will be on the road tonight (Friday) to take on Oskaloosa for Round One of Boys Substate. Game time is 7 p.m.
