Trojans fall short in comeback attempt

KRIEGEL HITS FIRST CAREER HOME RUN

July 23, 2018

After losing a two-run lead in the bottom of the fourth, the Trojans mounted a rally attempt but ultimately fell short for a 6-5 defeat against Newton on Tuesday, July 10. Despite the loss, a key highlight in the evening was the first home run for STC's Carter Kriegel. Kriegel joins Lane Koch as the only Trojans who have hit home runs this season. This was the first time in three years South Tama has had multiple players go yard.

Mickey Wanatee started for the Trojans and took the loss. He pitched for 3 2/3 innings before being relieved by Lucas Wilkerson and Cam Klostermann who each pitched for an inning. Before stepping off the mound Wanatee surrendered seven hits, six runs and struck out five. Wanatee had a really nice performance from the mound until he began to struggle midway through the fourth inning.

The Trojans jumped out to an early lead in the top of the first inning. Cael Kellogg reached base after a line drive single to left field. Next up for the Trojans was Kriegel. A ball was thrown then a strike and another ball. On the fourth pitch Kriegel sent it over the left field fence for a home run. It was the first career home run for the junior who has hit .291 this year with seven doubles and one triple.

"Tonight was my first homerun," said Kriegel. "It felt really good. It felt good off the bat and it felt good running around the bases and seeing everyone at home plate. It was a good feeling."

Kriegel finished the night 2-4 from the plate and recorded three RBIs. "I felt pretty good at the plate. I?thought I?saw the ball well, probably saw it as good as I?saw it all season."

As Kriegel rounded the bases he even got a high five from Newton's Taylor Danley as he rounded the bases. The two did not know each other, it was just a moment of sportsmanship between the two players.

"I?actually didn't know him. You just see a kid put a good swing on it you give him props," Kriegel explained.

Bottom of the 4th

Things were going favorably for the Trojans. They weren't seeing any offensive production but they were holding the Cardinals scoreless while they had a two-run lead. However things quickly shifted in Newton's favor in the bottom of the 4th.

Newton's Trevor Ergenbright singled on a fly ball to right field. STC's short stop Brayden Smith made a nice play deep in the infield and connected with Kriegel at first for the put out. Ergenbright however advanced to third on the play. Ben Leal then singled on a line drive that brought Ergenbright home. Kamden Kuennen doubled. Wanatee walked the next three batters which allowed the Cardinals to score two more runs to take the lead. The Trojans brought in Lucas Wilkerson for relief which was a tough task as the bases were loaded. The Cardinals scored three more runs for a total of six runs in the inning before the Trojans were able to finally get out of the inning.

Top of the 5th

The Trojans were able to get one run back after the tough 4th inning. The Trojans would look again to Kellogg and Kriegel to get their bats swinging. Sure enough Kellogg doubled and Kriegel drove in courtesy runner Gavin Jimenez with a single.

Top of the 6th

The top of the 6th started with Jackson Beltz, Brayden Smith and Colton Vest. Newton began to have their own struggles from the mound. Julian Hotchkin walked both Beltz and Smith. Vest grounded into a fielder's choice which landed him on first but Smith was out at second. Kellogg for a third time came through for the Trojans doubling to left field. Both Beltz and Vest scored as a result. Kriegel who was 2-4 from the plate grounded out to end the inning.

Top of the 7th

The Trojans would have one more chance to try and either tie or regain the lead. They trailed 6-5 in the top of the 7th. Newton's defense was able to hold the Trojans and the Cardinals snuck by with a 6-5 win. Kellogg led the Trojans from the plate going 3-4 with 2 RBIs.
