Last year, Callie Frakes, spent much of the cross country season sidelined with an injury. It was disappointing for the now junior who qualified for the State Cross Country meet in her freshman season with the Trojans.

But this year she is back and for the most part healthy. Frakes and the Trojans ran in their season opener at the Marshalltown Community College Early Bird meet on Thursday, August 23.

"The race was good. It was nice weather," said Frakes, who finished in the top 15 at 12th with a time of 22:07.

The injury does still somewhat persist but she is learning how to deal with it.

"For me personally around 22 minutes is not my best time but being out last year for most of the season, I didn't know what to expect. It's been awhile since I ran a competitive 3.1 miles," she said.

"It's been tough and frustrating because I wore a boot for 16 weeks and right after I was cleared to take it off, an x-ray showed that the growth plates in my hips were trying to close while I was wearing the boot. So one side had a big gap and the other was almost closed. It threw my whole gait off when I was running and actually started out to be really sore."

Frakes did get in some running with the track team last spring. She had a pretty successful season qualifying for the State Track and Field Meet. She finished 23rd in the 1500 Meter Run. Now her team will be looking to her for leadership and talent and she will hopefully make a return to Fort Dodge in October. As for the cross country season, she does have some goals in mind.

"Nothing is impossible and I want to try and get down to 20:25 which is what I ran at Districts my freshman year," said Frakes.

Also running for the Trojans were JoJo Tyynismaa who enters her freshman year for the Trojans. She is the third child for head coach Robert Tyynismaa to run with the Trojans cross country team. She finished her first race respectively at 30th with a time of 24:46. Next for the Trojans was Alyssa Chyma in 42nd place with a time of 25:30, Abbigail Froelich at 52nd with a time of 27:46, Makayla Backen at 56th with a time of 28:42. Backen saw some varsity minutes last year with the volleyball team but switched over to cross country this year. Neena Lasley was also in the varsity pack for the Trojans.

The Trojans will be competing next on September 4 at Ahrens Park in Grinnell. Races begin at 4:30 p.m.
