Younkers now a memory in Marshalltown

September 10, 2018
By Polly Sokol - The Chronicle (psokol@tamatoledonews.com) , Toledo Chronicle, Tama News-Herald

On Sunday, Aug. 26, Younkers in Marshalltown closed its doors for good. The last four months has been an emotional roller-coaster for us employees, past and present, as we continued to work to liquidate the store.

On April 14 via a phone conference we were first notified the Marshalltown Younkers and every Younkers store would be closing. The journey then began and Sunday 26 it all became real.

Through tears and laughter the final pieces and merchandise were sold.

Employees past and present showed up to say goodbye and pose for a final group picture. We have become family. You don't work side by side day in and day out (especially those horrific holiday hours) and not form a family tie.

We will all miss working daily with one another. We would like to thank Bill Thrower who directed us through the closing procedure. He was a pleasure to work with during this sad time! Younkers, originally Younkers and Brothers was founded 162 years ago in Keokuk, Iowa, by three Polish born brothers, Lipmen, Samual, and Marcus. Later in 1874 a fourth brother, Herman joined. Their motto, which carried on until the end, "We are here to do what is right.
