Those good old days! Haruumph!

To Take A Mulligan!

The other day, a sports station was showing some recent highlights but then they showed several highlights of ball games from the late fifties and early sixties. Wow, what a wake up call! As I watched these old highlights, my mind wandered (it often does), to those good old days. Hmmmm, were they all that good.

Back in 1950, one's Lifespan was about 68 years. Yikes, I'm just a little over a year away from that dreaded statistic. However, today, my Lifespan is about 79 years. Ah, much better.

Remember those hot summer days back in 1959? No air conditioning at all in over 95% of the homes. Just those old rickkitty noisy box fans, spreading hot air in an already hot house.

And what about those TVs? Black & White television for most of us. Three channels plus PBS. Nothing like the high definition 58 inch televisions of today. I remember those TV's would not hold a show in place. They would roll up and down, up and down, up and............well, you get the PICTURE!!

Speaking of televisions, my Dad back in the fifties did have a remote control---ME!!

No Microwave cooking back then!! Good old day! Egads, my friends. Who can live without a microwave??? Not the Shedas!!

Speaking of cooking, no nice Teflon-coated pots and pans either. Pots and pans that took overnight to soak and two hours to scrub clean. Not that I ever did anything like that, but..........

Jeans with several patches in the knees and backside. Remember those "iron-on" patches?

Telephones with no voice mail or anything back in the good old days. Party lines! What was your line.....two longs and a short or was it two shorts and a long????

What about those long distance phone calls? Did your home have that secret code of calling home so you didn't get charged the long distance fee? Yea, we did too!!!

Vacations! Remember driving on all two-lane roads as there was very little interstate highways back then. No GPS or apps on the phone. Nope, we all had those individual state maps that unfolded so nicely but were impossible to fold back up correctly. One person drove and the other navigated back then. Yepper, the good old days!!

But we knew our neighbors, loved those Sunday dinners, get-togethers with the family and neighbors, pick-up ball games and other games with the kids, band concerts in the summer time, sledding and ice skating in the winter, knowing everyone's business and all the other things that went on in the "Good Old Days."

Let me know what you think at or call me at 319.327.4640. Our old Chelsea number was 489-2316............I think.

Before that with the old, old crank on-the-wall telephone, it was #60.
