Trojans fall to 0-4 with district play on horizon

The South Tama Trojans returned home on Friday, September 14 after being on the road for two weeks. The Trojans hosted Nevada for their final non-district game of the season. The contest resulted in the Trojans falling to 0-4 on the season after a 45-27 loss to the Cubs. It was a tough night for the team who continues to struggle especially defensively. Friday night players and fans alike also battled mosquitos that were out in full force.

"Defensively we're young. We've got so many guys that haven't played in those positions before. They are making mistakes that they won't make next year. We'll get there," said Nate Doran.

Coming into district play with four losses is a daunting uphill battle for the Trojans. It may just be a season where the team will need to focus on and celebrate the smaller victories.

Some of those victories included the work of Peyton Vest who racked up his most rushing yards of the season with 230 in 20 carries.

Nevada really came after the Trojans in the first half. STC trailed the Cubs 31-0 at halftime. Instead of folding STC continued to work and they were rewarded with a carry into the end zone by Vest early in the third quarter. Uriel Martinez kicked the extra point to put the Trojans on the board down 38-7.

The fourth quarter was when the majority of STC's offensive production came to fruition. Coach Nate Doran introduced a new offense to the team last week. One play, the eagle, had Vest taking to the air and connecting with quarterback Drake Crawford for a touchdown.

"It was just a little sneak pass, one of those fun plays we put in. From going back in the day if we put something in we want to run it. We don't want to practice something we aren't going to do," said Coach Nate Doran.

The Trojans held Nevada and once back on offense were able to score again off a carry up the middle. This cut into Nevada's 45-27 lead but the outcome of the night was long already decided.

Nonetheless South Tama kept on and put one more touchdown on the board. With just under a mintue to play Crawford connected with Keith Keahna. Martinez kicked the extra point and the game ended with Nevada handily winning 45-26.

Nevada quarterback Kody Kruschwitz was 22 of 33 for pass completions and racked up 369 passing yards. Kruschwitz, along with Jakob Strottman, Blake Bottorf and Sam Abraham all found the end zone for the Cubs. Jack Cahill went 6 of 6 in PAT Kicking and also booted a 34 yard field goal.

Moving into District competition the Trojans are set to face some even tougher competition. They will come up against Class 3A third ranked Pella on Friday, September 28 on the Dutch's home turf. The Trojans will host Knoxville for STC's Homecoming on Friday, Oct. 6. The Panthers are 2-2. They will then be on the road for the annual Steve Kriegel rophy contest against Grinnell on Friday, October 12. They will end the regular season at home hosting Oskaloosa who are 3-1.

"1 and 0," Doran said, "that's our goal every week. Hopefully the kids continue to echo that. We're trying to keep the same things going. We are going to still wake up early on Monday and do our strength. We aren't going to change anything. District play is coming and we are here to play. We are young and are making mistakes but we aren't going to quite."
