Back to school!

Take a Mulligan

October 7, 2018
By John Sheda , Toledo Chronicle, Tama News-Herald

Hard to believe that summer is waving us good-bye. I've played my share of golf this year and am not at all done playing for the season but I've taken my share of mulligans. Baseball is winding up its' long season, and football is just beginning. AND SCHOOL IS IN FULL SWING.

Last Sunday in church, we had a special service for our kids going to school. We prayed over them to have successful school years; lifted up all the teachers, and finally gave a challenge to parents, (and grandparents as well). It's called Sheda's Ten Commandments for Parents:

Thou shalt not depend on you school for the moral and spiritual guidance for your children. Not the Church or Sunday School either. They will help you but it is YOUR responsibility to provide this.

Thou shalt not compare the progress of your son or daughter with your other kids or with other kids in general. Your child is absolutely unique. 7 billion people in the world today and no one is quite like your son or daughter.

Thou shalt work with their teacher and also expect all involved to do their best.

Thou shalt be keenly aware of what's being taught. Be active and pro-active in your child's schooling.

Thou shalt not criticize or be critical of teachers and coaches in front of your kids. This allows your child to have excuses.

Thou shalt take time to laugh, smile and have a good time with your kids. They will turn out fine! As Bugs Bunny says, "Unlax."

Thou shalt at all times know who your kid's friends are and who they're hanging out with.

Thou shalt again at all times be the parent first and then, if possible, be a friend to your children.

Thou shalt treat your kids as mature and responsible but don't forget to let them be kids a couple of times a week.

Thou shalt make sure your home is a secure, loving and safe place to be. This goes for your school and your church too. Our kids need to know we have their backs-at all times!

Children Live

What They Learn

If a child lives with CRITICISM, they learn to condemn.

If a child lives with HOSTILITY, they learn to fight.

If a child lives with RIDICULE, they learn to be timid & fearful.

If a child lives with SHAME, they learn to feel guilty.

If a child lives with TOLERANCE, they learn to be patient.

If a child lives with ENCOURAGEMENT, they learn to be confident.

If a child lives with PRAISE, they learn to appreciate.

If a child lives with FAIRNESS, they learn justice.

If a child lives with SECURITY, they have faith.

If a child lives with APPROVAL, they learn to like themselves.

If a child lives with ACCEPTANCE, they learn the value of friendship. And when all else fails, remember to "Take A Mulligan."
