Trojans celebrate Senior Night at volleyball

Tuesday was the first of what will be several Senior Night Celebrations for the STC Trojans. STC Volleyball seniors were honored along with their parents in front of a home crowd on Tuesday, October 2. Seniors included Stacey Slaven, Mackenzie Beyer, Katie Campbell, Madison Rohach, Jaelin Berger, Azra Papakee, Abby Morgan and Cora Van De Walle.

"Senior Night is always a great night for us. We enjoy celebrating the seniors. This being the first year I've had 8, it was awesome to have that many on the team. The girls always do a great job pulling together to honor the girls. With this being Homecoming week, senior night and tying everything together there was a lot of excitement before the game and it kind of showed right off the bat until we kind of got in our groove. Then things settled down and it was nice to see the seniors that were in performing like they were," said coach Amy Dolash.

The Trojans hosted Vinton (14-17) for their final conference game of the season before the WaMaC Conference Tournament. STC fell to the Vikettes 3-1 in four sets.

In set one the Vikettes jumped out to a 6-0 lead with Taylor Spies serving. The Trojans managed to claw back into the game. They got within a point of the Vikettes, 11-10, before Vinton took back control winning 25-16.

The second set was quite opposite of the first. The two teams traded points back and forth until the Trojans took over winning 25-16.

In the third set the Trojans had as much of a 7 point lead over the Vikettes. But the Vikettes came knocking and won 26-24.

The fourth set was the closest played set of the night as the Trojans tried to push it to five sets. The Vikettes snuck by with a close 25-23 win to close the evening.

"We knew Vinton was going to be a tough match for us, coming in with roughly the same record especially in the WaMaC. We knew they would also be anxious for that win. Some of the girls were just on for example Mackenzie was passing really well. She was digging and reading what the hitters were doing. She just had some amazing ups. Katie kind of had her work cut out for her in that regard. I know Stacey and Madi and Jaelin were really taking it to them and focusing on finding the corners. It takes a toll after a while because some of the rallies were longer. Going back and forth it does get challenging to push through those. One of the things that hurt us was our serving. We started out that fourth game when we had 10 points we gave them half those points by our mis-serves. That was one of those areas where we made too many errors," said Dolash.

Stacey Slaven led the night and was 17-40 in the kills column followed by Madison Rohach who was 11-29. Katie Campbell was 17-19 from the serve line with 4 aces.

Regional Pairings

The Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union announced Regional Pairings on Tuesday afternoon. South Tama will be headed south and facing a familiar opponent, Williamsburg. The Regional games are set for Wednesday, October 17 at 7 p.m. South Tama and Williamsburg met already this season and the Trojans fell in three sets to the Raiders.

"That is exciting for me. I'd love another crack at them. We might see them in the WaMaC pool play. Williamsburg was not one of our best games. We struggled a lot in passing against Williamsburg. They are a really scrappy team and we will have to prepare hard for that," said Dolash.

Also playing in Class 3A Region 6 are Tipton vs. Mid-Prairie in Tipton, Eddyville-Blakesburg vs. PCM in Eddyville and Chariton vs. Clarke in Chariton.

The winner of each bracket will move on to play again on Oct. 23. Should South Tama top Williamsburg they would play the next round in Tipton.

The Championship Bracket will be played on Oct. 29 in Grinnell.
