Marshalltown hospital closing parts of south side campus

November 8, 2018
Special to The Chronicle , Toledo Chronicle, Tama News-Herald

MARSHALLTOWN - Over the past year, the UnityPoint Health - Marshalltown leadership team has been focused on developing efficiencies and opportunities to right size the organization and put the organization on a path for the future. As part of our sustainability efforts, we are constantly assessing the appropriate level of services for Marshalltown and what essential services need to remain in operation.

The hard fact remains that year-to-date, UnityPoint Health - Marshalltown has had a $7 million dollar loss. In fact, UnityPoint Health - Marshalltown is behind budget twice as much as what was projected.

After a thorough review, it has been determined that on Friday, Nov. 30, the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and The Bistro located on the South Campus will close. The average daily census of the ICU is one patient and The Bistro revenue is operating at a significant loss. These closures impact 15 employees and our Human Resources department is assisting as there are multiple patient care employment opportunities available within UnityPoint Health - Marshalltown or through other UnityPoint Health affiliates.

In addition to these two closures, 10 non-patient care positions (both full and part-time), will be eliminated to enable UnityPoint Health - Marshalltown to focus on its core services, which are emergency, primary care, urgent care, obstetrics and outpatient surgeries.

Decisions such as this are very difficult but necessary if we are to course correct and place Marshalltown on a path to financial sustainability. As healthcare continues to change we must make thoughtful, strategic decisions that position our organization for the future and support our ability to carry out our mission over the long-term. In order for UnityPoint Health - Marshalltown to remain in the community, we must be financially viable as well as have the support of the community, using local services.
