South Tama schools enrollment held steady for the current school year over the 2017-18 term with an official enrollment totaling 1,441.1 students.

The figure was actually up the one-tenth of a student in the measurement over last year, school board members learned during their regular meeting on Monday, Nov. 19.

The small increase allows for only a $675 state aid per student increase for which application was approved on a voice vote.

In addition, there are an additional 94 students enrolled in the district's voluntary pre-school program.

South Tama has a total of 29 non-resident students enrolled in and 102 students enrolled out. For the 2017-18 year, STC had 38 non-resident students and a total of 111 students enrolled out.

"The goal is to (have) a culture in our district to encourage students to attend," Superintendent Jared Smith told board members.

Pay To Teachers For Coverage

A current shortage of substitute teachers causes gaps in classroom coverage because of teacher absences school board members were told Monday. The coverage is provided by on-duty teaching staff during their non-classroom preparation periods when substitutes are unavailable.

Upon the recommendation of Supt. Smith the board approved paying teaching staff members an additional $22 hourly when filling in to provide the classroom coverage. Approval was by unanimous voice vote.

The pay is slightly higher than the amount paid to substitutes- to cover a full day of classes a substitute is paid $115 and staff members cumulatively covering seven classroom period would receive $134.

A tabulation provided to the board of teacher absences not filed by substitute teachers during October showed 12 whole days and four half-days for the elementary' seven whole and five half days for the middle school; and four whole and four half days at the high school.

Personnel

The board approved contracts for Zach Naniot for head high school custodian effective Dec. ; Haley Ehrich as middle school counselor effective Jan. 2, 2019; and Richard Hopper as assistant 8th grade basketball coach effective in January, 2019.
