Consider new sign placement for Reinig-Toledo Civic Center

December 6, 2018

It may be shortened to Reinig Civic Center with "Toledo" dropped from the top line if a successful bid for rebuilding a sign for the center, 1007 S. Prosepct Dr., is received. That was the outcome of a discussion during the Monday night, Nov. 26, city council meeting.

It's proposed to put a new face on the sign which was formerly located in front of the Toledo Community Building with the new wording.

Council member Joe Boll called for the top line to read "Reing Civic Center" without "Toledo" included on the sketch to be submitted for bids.

Mayor John Lloyd and other council members appeared to be in agreement with the deletion.

The next line on the sign does contain Toledo: Toledo City Hall. Also, to be designated on the sign are City Council Chambers, Public Works Office and Event Center.

The offices were relocated after the council voted to deed the Community Building to the Wieting Theatre trustees to make room fro a new addition to the theatre.

When first ordered and installed by then Toledo Economic Director Don Meekin, the sign was a surprise to at least some residents with it's bold annoucement of "Toledo City Hall." The building had been commonly known as the "Community Building."

For the Reinig-Toledo Civic Center, the will of the benefactor, Leona Reinig, states, "This center shall be known as the "Reinig-Toledo City Civic Center."

When built, Bill Christensen, mayor at the time, got rid of "city" in the name and considered dropping "Toledo" as well.
